Felsted School

Project Background Brief:
Felsted School, is an independent day and boarding school founded in 1564 with a 1,000-pupil enrolment and a predominance for producing world-class sportsmen and women.
When they wanted to replace their ageing Sports Hall lighting, PPG Projects were delighted when the School approached us directly to provide a solution for their requirements.
The School had specific requirements: to provide a lighting system that would cater not just for sports training and events, but also for different sports that require different lighting levels and also for general use, such as examinations, lectures, and social events. They also required new emergency lighting and a complete lighting control system that would adapt instantly to their changing operational requirements.

Particular Challenges:
During our routine design and consultation period, we selected an obvious choice for the advanced LED luminaires that were necessary for the performance requirements.
As we promote the use of cutting edge technology, we integrated a Bluetooth lighting control system with the luminaires to offer not just ‘normal’ manual switching in a dedicated control room, but also an android or iOS app to control and switch the lighting. This ensured that whether using manual switching or the app, the lighting could be instantly controlled, or the lighting levels changed from 500 through to 1500 LUX instantly.
This can also be achieved remotely from anywhere in the world via an internet connection and the using the app.
As an added lighting feature, Automatic switching was installed via occupancy detectors in protective cages in case of accidental ball strikes, so by just entering the Sports Hall, the lighting was activated by default. As part of our integrated services, all emergency lighting was designed and installed to BS 5266 regulations.
As the School could not put their timetable on hold, we had to work within restricted time constraints, this meant an accelerated program of works to ensure completion with one of our dedicated installation teams. At all times during the installation phase, the School had one point of contact with PPG Projects, with daily updates on the progression of the installation.
Special Project Features:
By installing the latest lighting technology, an advanced control system with automatic occupancy detection and an automatic emergency lighting system, we were able to demonstrate to this Client at the design phase that this installation would produce an annual cost saving against their existing running costs.
In addition, the Client has the peace of mind that all the Sports Hall Luminaires and the lighting levels are guaranteed for 10 years.
