Cricket for Change, The Change Foundation

Project location: Croydon

Project Background Brief:

The Change Foundation began in the 1980’s by using cricket as a tool to promote community cohesion and peace during the conflict in the heart of the local community. Boasting a popular two-lane indoor cricket net facility, PPG Projects were commissioned to ensure Lighting was ECB compliant and that regular lamp failures would no longer be an occurrence. Naturally with any indoor Sports Facility, the running costs can be extremely costly due to high power consuming fluorescent lighting so this was a big consideration within our design as to how we could maximise the energy saving the client would benefit from.

Particular Challenges:

The existing Electrical Trunking was to be reused as part of our scope of works and it had become obsolete, so with our nominated supplier we created a bespoke trunking lid suitable for the existing, so that the cosmetic appearance of our workmanship was ingratiating. During our project delivery phase, London entered COVID-19 Tier 4 restrictions which limited customer staff working on site, meaning our Project team communicated with the customer around site access times that worked for both parties. The project was completed ahead of schedule with phenomenal results.

Special Project Features:

The existing lighting was set up using three rows of 12 fluorescent fittings, totalling 36 fittings consuming approximately 8kW of energy. This was offering on average 500 lux which is significantly short of the minimum ECB and Sport England lighting guidance.  When evaluating our design options, we quickly suggested that with our specialist LED Cricket Net Lighting Luminaires we could reduce three rows of luminaires to two which would keep the glare rating to a minimum for the batsman and bowlers, this also vastly reduced ongoing energy costs.

The design specification we were asked to achieve was 750+lux and 0.8 uniformity, with an energy efficient yet performance design, we were able to achieve over 950 lux with 0.85 uniformity. Working closely with our supply chain, we utilised a special LED Cricket Lighting product, which featured a UGR Honeycomb Lens which ensured minimal glare.
